New Obsession: Emily Dickinson

As dreaded finals week begins, I was forced to write my final paper for my Poetry class. The paper consisted of choosing a poet we discussed in class and describing his/her life from beginning to end. I chose to focus on Emily Dickinson. After thoroughly journaling the ups and downs, influences, and triumphs of Dickinson's life; I was compelled to say the least. The second part of this paper was to try and prove how the writers poems accomplish his/her purpose, this was when it got tricky. After hours of research (and the type of focus where you can't look away from the computer screen even if you tried) I was impressed and influenced by this poet and her strong will to tell the cold hard truth. What stood out to me about Emily Dickinson was her ability to break the rules and guidelines of poetry. Her poems consisted of raw honesty and painful emotions and she never held back. Though poetry has never been an interest or even something I enjoyed in the slightest bit, this assignment struck me, hard. This poet was able to speak her mind through her poetry and make me feel things I never believed a poem could make me feel. I admired the way she was able to bend the rules and follow her own way of writing without a second thought. Here are links to a few of my favorite poems by Emily Dickinson, I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
